Käsknöpfle Schönebach

Some routes are all the more worth it when they take a little longer. Schönenbach sits deep in the Bregenzerwald, reached via a toll road, and once you arrive, you know right away: this was the right call.

Jagdgasthaus Egender is rustic and modern at once, with a terrace that turns a mountain panorama into the main course. Servers wear dirndls, the cooking is honest. The menu is small, but that's exactly the point — not about choice, but about doing one thing really well.

Many years ago, Lisa Maria herself used to serve the Käsknöpfle here.

The Kässpätzle arrive in a wooden bowl, topped with crispy onions, the cheese pulling into long strands as you serve yourself a portion. If you'd like something lighter, go for the marinated goat cheese. And if you love game, there's ragout with Knöpfle, or a venison patty röstiburger, where the bun is swapped for crispy potato röstis.

The visit pairs best with a short hike — Schönenbach makes the perfect setting for it. And if you want to bring some of that good cheese home, a piece of mountain cheese to take with you is a must.

Reservations are recommended, especially in summer. But even without a spot on the terrace, you'll usually still find a good place to sit.

A small tip: from Bezau, it's a lovely bike ride to Schönenbach, or you can hike there from the Baumgarten mountain station and take the bus back to Bezau.
