Wälderbähnle
In the rhythm of old times. A narrow-gauge railway, steam, and the valley at a different pace. The journey takes 20 minutes — and stays with you much longer.

From 1902 to 1980, the Bregenzerwaldbahn connected the valley with Bregenz and Lake Constance. 35 kilometres, narrow gauge, through the Achschlucht gorge, right through the village. Then a rockfall put an end to it all. What remained is the Wälderbähnle — and with it a piece of the Bregenzerwald that can’t be experienced quite like this anywhere else.
Today the museum railway runs the 5 kilometres between Bezau and Schwarzenberg — with historic steam and diesel locomotives, operated by volunteer railway enthusiasts, with historic tickets as a keepsake. The one-way journey takes 20 minutes. There and back, an hour. And somewhere in between, you realise how good it feels to simply let yourself be carried along — no screen, no rush, just the view from the window out over the Bregenzerwald.
An experience for children. And for everyone else too. And for those travelling with the Bregenzerwald Gäste-Card, there’s even a one-euro discount.
Especially in winter: the St. Nicholas rides are a chapter of their own. Once a year, St. Nicholas comes along for the journey — and what unfolds is exactly the kind of thing you come to the Bregenzerwald for. Calm, special, and utterly unforgettable for the little ones. Tickets are in high demand and sell out quickly — best to book early.
The Wälderbähnle can also be chartered exclusively — for groups, birthdays, company outings, or simply because you want the valley all to yourself for a while. With a buffet car, photo stop and everything that goes with it.
